The Wood Peckers is a CD compilation co-op inspired by a radio segment I heard on public radio last year. The concept is simple: 12 people who love music are invited to join. Each person is responsible for a month of the year for which they will make a music mix. When their month comes along, they create a CD compilation, complete with artwork, and send it out to the 11 other members of the group. Like a mix tape from high school, the playlist can simply be a member's favorite songs - or it can be thematic, with transitions and flow. There are no rules except to get the mix to the other members by the end of the month. And to rock peoples earlobes off.
FYI, the "Wood Peckers" name has several inspirations: In the NPR radio show I heard last year, it seemed like all of the participating groups were named after animals: Bobcats, Cheetahs, etc. Also, it's more than a coincidence that all the cool indie bands these days have names inspired by the Discovery channel: Wolf Parade, Animal Collective, The Deers, The Wilderness, etc, so why shouldn't we follow suit? And most importantly, the morning that I decided to do this mix club, I heard a strange noise coming from the attic of my house. It sounded like a mini woodpecker. The noise went on for five months and drove me crazy. It finally ended this winter. Maybe the thing drowned in the rain.
Hopefully this blog will help to keep our Wood Peckers club alive and well.

Dude! Tay, you rock with the sex mix.
Bernie, we've already got 12, but there was talk last night of starting a "splinter cell" called The Penguins or something...
Yup. Love this idea. With the new year I should see if I can rope another 11 souls into it.
